CITY OF FAIRBURY Seasonal Line Utility Line Intern (not to exceed 1,400 hours) in Fairbury, Nebraska

Summer Utility Line Intern (not to exceed 1,040 hours)

Position Summary

This position reports to the Electric Distribution Superintendent. Under the direction of the Electric Distribution Superintendent and Line Foreman, the position is involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and overhead electric distribution and service lines, transformers, meters, metering equipment, and related equipment. Operating a variety of equipment including but not limited to digger truck, bucket truck, backhoe, skid steer, etc. will be necessary. Lastly, the position will assist other City operations and perform other duties as required. Internship is approximately May - August.

Responsibilities

  • The internships function is to learn and be mentored from experience utility line technicians in the field.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair the electrical distribution and transmission system.
  • Operates power driven machinery, such as hydraulic compression tamps, chain saws, etc.
  • Uses common hand tools to construct and maintain overhead and underground lines
  • Operates boom and bucket trucks which require a valid Class B, CDL.
  • Must have good communication skills
  • Performs other duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • The applicant must have a high school diploma.
  • Must be part of a utility line degree program and be qualified or an internship.
  • Must possess working knowledge of the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution lines and substation maintenance.
  • Must possess knowledge to include the installation of meters, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, etc.
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must be comfortable working and climbing at different elevations on ladders, poles, etc.
  • Must know how to use tools and equipment safely.
  • Must be proficient in pole-top and bucket rescue procedures through courses offered at accredited institution.
  • Must be able operate a computer and other technical tools.
  • Must have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Applicant must maintain a Class B, CDL throughout the duration of internship program.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Finalists must possess a valid drivers license with acceptable driving history. Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET), including but not limited, to drug screening and a criminal background check.
