Job Title: Seasonal Sanitation Employee
Reports to: Public Works Superintendent
Category: Seasonal (Summer) - Not to exceed 1040 hours or 6 months
Pay: $14.25/hour

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Sanitation Foreman, the Sanitation Employee performs routine manual work in the collection of garbage, recycling and refuse. This is routine manual work requiring no previous training or experience but requires physical endurance and a willingness to perform manual tasks. Heavy lifting, exposure to solid waste and all-weather conditions will occur.
Responsibilities and Examples of Work:
Collects and dumps refuse or recyclable materials from containers into trucks;
Operates equipment that compresses the collected refuse;
Operates automated or semi-automated hoisting devices that raise refuse bins and dump contents into openings in truck bodies;
Dismounts garbage trucks to collect garbage and remounts trucks to ride to the next collection point. Must be capable of climbing up and down ladders;
Picks up large items at curb sides such as sofas and appliances with assistance;
Throws and stacks used tires;
Performs routine maintenance on department equipment;
Sweep and clean working areas at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center;
Maintain grounds at the Transfer Station and Recycling Center including mowing, etc.;
Assist with maintenance of department equipment when needed;
Must enjoy working in outdoor setting in all-weather conditions;
Assists other City departments and performs other duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance.

Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent;
Must be able to operate a refuse trucks and a variety of machinery including but not limited to mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, etc.;
Ability to respond to emergency and problem situations in an effective manner;
Must be able to follow verbal and written directions;
Ability to work safely;
Must be able to perform heavy manual work on a regular basis and for extended periods;

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, listen, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Applicants must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly and safely perform repetitive physical tasks. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Finalists must possess a valid drivers license with acceptable driving history. Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET), including but not limited, to drug screening, criminal background check and a Physical Capacity Profile will be required.
