CITY OF FAIRBURY Water Service Employee in Fairbury, Nebraska

Reports to: Water Superintendent
Category: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Salary Range: $24.63/hr. to $29.59/hr. (DOQ)

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Water Superintendent, the Water Service Employee will aid in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the City water and sewer systems, including but not limited to the Citys water pumps, wells, tanks, water treatment facilities, and related equipment. The position will perform duties relating to water quality, including water quality sampling to ensure the system complies with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Operating a variety of equipment including but not limited to backhoe, skid steer, etc. will be necessary. Lastly, the position will assist other City operations and perform other duties as required.
Responsibilities
Perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal State and Local regulations governing the water treatment and distribution process.
Perform the installation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant, City wells, and all of their components.
Work with State Officials to comply with quality assurance testing procedures.
Performs mechanical maintenance on process equipment.
Conducts routine maintenance of the treatment plant buildings and grounds.
On call to respond to emergencies such as water main breaks, sewer backups, etc.
Conduct weekend tests and inspection of the plant and well houses on a rotating basis.
Operate heavy machinery including sludge truck, backhoe, skid loader, etc.
Administer State DEQ and Federal EPA reports to comply with permit regulations.
Makes rounds of plant to assure proper mechanical and process operation.
Operate Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
Maintain a Nebraska Water Operator Certificate.
Identifies malfunctions and makes repairs.
Ability to communicate with public regarding Wastewater and Water Operations and protocols.
Assist with the installation and inspection of new sewer lines and services.
Flush and jet sewer mains.
Operate sewer cameras
Climb and work in confined spaces such as manholes.
Conducts water sampling
Assists other departments related to water issues: winterization, leaks, maintenance, etc
Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications

Skills and Qualifications The applicant must have a high school diploma. Must be able operate a computer and other technical tools. Must be able to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders. Mechanically inclined. Must be able to read and understand mechanical plans and prints. Applicant must maintain a valid drivers license. CDL designation preferred. It is an essential function of the position and a condition of employment that the individual possess a current Nebraska water operator certificate, grade 4, or obtains such within six (6) months of employment; failure to do so will deem the individual unqualified for the position. It is an essential function of the position and a condition of employment that the individual possess a Nebraska water operator certificate grade 3, within 4 years of obtaining a grade 4 certificate; failure to do so will deem the individual unqualified for the position. Preference will be given to those with a grade 2 water operators license. The City will provide training and education needed to obtain appropriate licensing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, listen, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl, work in confined spaces at times, and travel up and down stairs and ladders. This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Applicant must obtain a Level 4 Physical Capacity Profile at time of hire. Finalists must possess a valid drivers license with acceptable driving history. Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET), including but not limited, to drug screening, criminal background check and a Physical Capacity Profile will be required.
