This position exists to operate the mechanical systems for the buildings and grounds of Inver Hills Community College under the direction of the Building Services Manager. The position will also assist in minor construction projects, remodeling, and related duties for the campus consisting of 12 major buildings, and a Power and Chiller Plant.

Minimum Qualifications

  • First Class C Boiler's License, or ability to acquire license within first twenty-four (24) months of employment.

  • Knowledge and skills in the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in trades work sufficient to assist skilled trades staff in the completion of assigned projects.

  • Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to complete minor trades plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and/or electrical systems and equipment.

  • Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to machinery and equipment including the general maintenance and minor repairs of buildings.

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions sufficient to interpret and carry out assignments in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Skills in using hand and power tools and other trades equipment.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety measures related to trades work sufficient to safely and efficiently perform the job duties.

  • Ability to provide work direction to unskilled helpers may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chief C Boilers License

  • Knowledge of and skill to operate fire alarm and security systems.

  • Commercial building maintenance experience.

  • Experience sketching, writing specifications, and estimating material and labor costs.

  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools, and other trades experience.

  • Experience and/or knowledge of commercial property maintenance.

Physical Requirements

  • Must possess physical health and endurance sufficient to use hand tools and handle light materials manually to perform work functions using step ladders, extension ladders, personal lifts, and scaffolding and to function in adverse weather conditions. Also, must have the ability to keep records, perform assigned tasks with limited work direction and be able to follow oral and written instructions.

  • This person must be able to work on their feet for eight hours a day, lift up to fifty pounds on an occasional basis, haul material and equipment, stoop, kneel, bend, push, pull, work above the shoulders, walk stairways and climb ladders.

Additional Requirements

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
