The Psychiatric Safety Specialist assumes safety and security responsibilities as delegated by the Nursing Leadership Team. These duties encompass various tasks, such as participating in the Code Intervention Team, performing patient property inventories, conducting contraband searches, and diligently monitoring unit premises to ensure the safety and security of the facility.

Patient Care :

  • Ability to base interventions on a thorough understanding of patient history, assessments, and treatment plans.

  • Proficiency in monitoring patients for changes requiring immediate action, continuously assessing behavioral indicators, and adhering to special status guidelines.

  • Skill in providing milieu support, patient care, supervision, interaction, and positive role modeling.

  • Ability to assist patients in adhering to community rules and guidelines and fostering positive peer relationships.

  • Ensures adherence to programmatic frameworks and offers assistance when necessary to ensure scheduled programming.

    Milieu Safety: Capability to take charge in code intervention situations, ensuring the safety of staff and patients, and conducting effective post-intervention debriefs with accurate documentation.

  • Demonstrates understanding and implementation of appropriate actions to avoid power struggles with patients, promoting effective teamwork to minimize aggressive behavior

  • Proficiency in maintaining a safe, organized, and therapeutic physical environment for patients.

    Compliance:

  • bility to assist with belonging inventory to prevent contraband during patient admissions.

  • Ensures daily completion of contraband searches and environmental rounds (EOC).

  • Proficiently completes documentation and performance audits as required.

  • Demonstrates the capability to complete necessary documentation and support departmental documentation needs.

    Team Collaboration:

  • Provides mentorship and just-in-time training to staff.

  • Leads team huddles and engages in proactive planning to address unit safety-related issues.

  • Maintains instructor certification for verbal de-escalation and handle with care techniques.

    Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • High School Diploma or equivlent

  • 3 years experience in the Mental Health Field.

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • A compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • An understanding of mental health disorders and crisis intervention techniques.

  • A commitment to upholding the highest standards of patient care and safety.
